The Almost-Perfect Ultra-Portable5
I just upgraded to this laptop from an 8.9" Atom-powered netbook (an Asus EeePC 900HA). Here are my thoughts after using the UL20A for a few days:

Pro's:
1. SMALL FOOTPRINT & LIGHT WEIGHT. The footprint of the laptop is similar to an 8.5"x11" sheet of paper (just slightly narrower and slightly longer), and at 3.3lbs, putting it in your briefcase or backpack is no more burdensome than an extra book or binder.
2. EXCELLENT KEYBOARD. The relatively large "chiclet" keyboard makes for an effortless typing experience.
3. PERFECT SCREEN SIZE. With a 12.1" 1366x768 screen, you're getting the resolution of a 13.3" laptop in a smaller package. At 130 pixels per inch, text on the 12" screen is often pretty small, but still acceptable. I would however advise against smaller screens (e.g. 11.6") at this resolution.
4. EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE. Despite the low clock speed, the UL20A's Core 2 Duo is MUCH faster than any Intel Atom. HD YouTube videos play flawlessly at ~67% CPU utilization, and general performance seems much smoother than on my old netbook. I especially notice the difference when scrolling through PDF's, which was often very slow and jerky on my EeePC.
5. EXCELLENT BATTERY LIFE. After 4.5 hours of mixed light web browsing, email, and PDF viewing, I still had 40% charge left. If the battery continued to be depleted at that rate, you'd end up with--that's right--exactly the quoted 7.5 hours! I used Windows 7's "Balanced" power scheme (not any of Asus's Power4Gear modes). After some testing, I can confirm that the processor will ramp up to max frequency during heavy usage with this mode, so there's no reason not to leave it in "Balanced" all the time.
6. VERY QUIET. Even when using it in a quiet room, it's nearly impossible to hear any fan noise.
7. EXTRA WARRANTY. The UL20A comes with 1 year of "accidental damage" coverage.
8. LITTLE THIRD-PARTY BLOATWARE. The only (non-Asus) bloatware was an anti-virus software trial and some silly games. I uninstalled these in minutes (and replaced the A-V trial with Microsoft's free Security Essentials program).
9. WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM. Unlike most netbooks, which ship with either Microsoft's ancient Windows XP or the crippled Windows 7 Starter Edition, this laptop comes with the full "premium" version of Microsoft's brand-new OS.

Con's:
1. ANNOYING TOUCHPAD. The texture of the touchpad causes way too much friction, which irritates your finger. The pointer also periodically freezes, placing a strange gray circle near the cursor (this is probably some stupid Synaptics feature I haven't figured out how to disable yet).
2. GLOSSY SCREEN. This causes annoying reflections, but in fairness most laptops have these nowadays.
3. ABSURD JUMBLE OF ASUS UTILITIES. Asus includes nearly a dozen separate utilities for various functions. Most have weird names, and it's not apparent what they do until you click on them. They also each seem to have their own distinct (amateurish) user interface. At the very least, Asus needs to cut the number of included programs in half (both through consolidation and elimination of pointless and redundant functions).
4. DISAPPOINTING LCD QUALITY. As was the case with my EeePC's screen, the contrast is too high, and there's a significant blue-ish hue by default. I do NOT recommend this laptop for SERIOUS photo editing (i.e. not for professionals). It should be fine for most users though.

Summary:
This notebook seems to hit a sweet spot between netbooks and full-size laptops: You're getting an almost full-size keyboard, adequate screen resolution, snappy performance, and Windows 7 Home Premium, while retaining much of the portability, low-cost, and battery life of a netbook.

CRAZY GOOD LAPTOP5
Current laptop is the Dell XPS M1330, a 13.3 inch laptop which seemed very cool to me in terms of build and weight (about four pounds). But even that started to feel big and heavy so when this one came out-- at this price!!!-- I pre-purchased. I have been tracking discussions here and on the notebook review forums, and have some immediate answers to various concerns:

1. it's 3 pounds six ounces with the battery. Feels like carrying a book.
2. the wireless is intel 1000 bgn and has held steady and been very fast since I first got the computer.
3. there's only one memory stick (2G) so you can easily pop in a second (which I did, before I even booted up the computer, for a grand total of $35.00) to bring the total memory to 4G.
4. The keyboard is full sized, or, if it's smaller, the difference is so minimal I can't tell. It does seem to me that some of the edge keys (delete, tab, function keys) are smaller.
5. It's crazy fast. My Windows Experence Index is:
Processor 4.1
Ram (with 4G) 4.8
Graphics 3.5 (I'm not bothered, but I'm not a gamer)
Gaming Graphics 3.3
HDD 5.8
6. Touchpad does pinch zoom and is very responsive.

Have not installed all my software yet, but three hours of removing bloatware with the computer set on "high performance" and using WiFi leaves me with close to three hours of battery left.

It's incredibly cool, meaning, in this case, temperature.

In sum: I am in awe.

UDPATE: I have been using the laptop continually since my purchase. It continues to impress me with build quality and performance. I have been upgrading all our home computers to Windows 7, and I notice that the Intel card on this laptop finds the network more quickly than the gigabit ethernet card on my quad core desktop, and transfer speeds are as good as or better than the other wireless N cards in the house. So I think the people who have had trouble with the card may have gotten a bad card. (Small comfort, I know...)

I had some minor issues with the touchpad, which felt sticky and slow to me. I finally spent some time in the synaptics settings panel, changing the sensitivity and speed of the pointer, and now find it works very well for me. So if the touchpad is bothering you, give that a try.

I really like the keyboard-- my Dell xps m1330 often inserts an extra letter if I hit a key too hard, or, at the other end of the spectrum, misses a key. Never happens with this one.

More than one person, on seeing the computer, has thought I finally upgraded to Mac.

Note: Did a clean install of windows 7 from a usb drive, no problems, to get rid of bloatware. All updated drivers available for download on the Asus website. There's a very nice summary of all Asus installed software at NotebookReview dot com forums-- search "bloatware" in the Asus section.

A THIN AND LIGHT THAT CONTINUES TO BE JUST RIGHT.5
REVIEW UPDATED ON 2-28-10

I've had this laptop for 3 months now and my 5-STAR initial impression continues to remain the same. My comments below have been updated but essentially haven't changed. Several weeks after I received the laptop though, I noticed a rather large dead pixel or small group of them right in the middle of the display. I contacted ASUS directly and YEP they replaced the screen free of charge including shipping and the whole process was completed in one week. The display is now perfect and kudos to ASUS for handling the issue so quickly.

1. LOOK & SIZE - The light-colored silver brushed aluminum lid is a fine complement to its ultra thin profile. It weighs only 3.3 lbs and doesn't feel as back heavy as some other netbooks/ultraportables that have 6-cell batteries. Quality in design, fit and finish are quite evident throughout.

2. SIGHT & SOUND - When I powered the ASUS UL20A up for the first time I was impressed with the display's noticeable increase in brightness and vivid contrasting colors compared to the notebooks I've owned in the past (HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, Samsung, Sony, Apple & Gateway covers the gamut). The High Definition LED-backlit screen really will make a pleasurable improvement in your viewing.

The front bottom positioned Altec Lansing speakers have a lot of volume at least for my ears and the Realtek HD Audio control panel offers 13 equalizer settings to satisfy your personal tone preferences. I keep the volume at about the 75% mark because that's usually plenty loud for me.

Much has been said about glossy screens giving off glare from the sun through indoor windows and overhead lights. Frankly I thought this would bother me more than it does but the bother is hardly anything at all with this laptop. Of course everyone's lifestyle is different and what may be good for one person may not be good for another. My lifestyle doesn't require me to use my laptop outdoors and using it indoors imposes little inconvenience for me to turn the laptop or lid slightly away from the offending overhead light or sunlight.

3. TOUCH & NAVIGATION - The chiclet-style keyboard is a breeze to type on. The gaps between the keys provide both room and better viewing of the separate keys, particularly with the keys being a charcoal black color and the deck being a contrasting silver color. I can now navigate easily and comfortably using the touchpad but had to initially adjust to the rather small touchpad that caused my husky fingers to sometimes go out-of-bounds. I use 2-finger scrolling which I personally prefer. Note: If you want to do 2-finger scrolling, you will have to install the generic, but more advanced Synaptics software directly from their website. Be sure to download the 64-bit Windows version. Installing it was easy but you will need an external mouse since the touchpad will have to be disabled during the install.

Lastly, I found my laptop to be amazingly COOL to my touch much unlike some other laptops that feel uncomfortably warm especially on the bottom-side. Also, I never heard the fan come on even once to keep this laptop so pleasantly cool.

4. SPEED & STAYING POWER - This laptop is FAST. I will admit I installed another 2 gigs of memory that probably helped improve its speed. I may open and close my laptop about 6 times a day and most of the time I just put it in hibernation mode which backs up your open applications to the hard drive and then shuts down completely causing no further battery drain as sleep mode does. Startup from hibernation for me takes around 20 second - VERY FAST. Also, opening and closing programs in day-to-day use is quicker as well. I didn't do timings here but intuitively I know they open and close faster.

I use the Balanced Power Setting option offered by Windows 7 instead of using one of the 4 discreet power levels offered by ASUS. The Balanced power Plan gives you added horsepower when you need it and less horsepower when you're just cruising on the highway. With this setting, I get 6 hours of battery life that I'm happy with. Your mileage will depend on your own usage & brightness settings.

5. SUGGESTION - Preloaded on your laptop will be Trend Micro Virus Protection that after a free trial period concludes, will cost you. Some folks suggested removing Trend Micro off your laptop right away and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials that can be downloaded directly from the Microsoft website. This anti-virus and anti-spyware software is FREE. That's right - FREE from Microsoft and it's surprisingly unobtrusive and very easy to use. You should consider this choice.

6. CONCLUSION - I can now navigate easily and comfortably after some initial practice but I think a larger touchpad would provide a more pleasurable navigating experience. Clearly there is a lot to like with this compact, thin & light. I think the laptop's 12.1 inch size is perfect and I appreciate its light weight, sleekness and the fact it's always quiet and cool to my touch. The display is beautiful and bright, the keyboard is a pleasure to type on, battery life is quite generous and the performance it offers is worthy of laptops costing more, perhaps much more.

Value for your money.5
Good Stuff:

- I type thirty or so pages a week between three different computers. The keyboard on this little guy works great for my purposes. I'm 6'3", 280 lb. and yeah, I have big hands. - Minimal bloatware. Took just a couple minutes to remove the stuff I didn't want.
- Attractive and practical design.
- It has a good display and decent sound... for a netbook.

[Edit] As far as sound goes, it depends on what you're listening to. My Baroque Classical and Russian Chant sounds great, as does anything spoken word. My Swedish Death Metal (and anything similar) sounds tinny and weak.

- While it was no use to me, it came with some basic office programs already loaded. Just one of many things Asus did to try and make this netbook ready to use straight out of the box.
- At least so far... the battery life is pretty close to what's advertised.

[Edit] I'm able to get just under eight hours of operation out of it, without turning the screen brightness all the way down or wireless/bluetooth options off.

[Edit] Swapping out the 1GB Memory stick for a 2 GB Memory stick was easy.

Bad Stuff:

- It attracts finger prints like bees to flowers. Get skins/decals/stickers for the outside cover if you're really OCD.
- Doesn't make coffee.
- Bulky. The wife has a 1002HA with a 2 cell battery and it is soo slim and strim looking compared to mine. Hers is a half pound lighter too. She still gets 4-5 hours of battery life out of hers even with the smaller battery.

Thoughts:

For the money, it's one of the best netbooks out there. I looked at almost every netbook available and read over 500 reviews before deciding on this one. I bought the 1002HA (brushed aluminized) for my wife because she didn't need the battery life and wanted something more professional looking.

[Edit] I spent the weekend passing it around to people I know and letting them type on it, and everyone (big or small) pretty much agreed that it was an easy keyboard to adjust to and comfortable. My father ordered the Blue 1000HE (from Amazon!) he liked it so much.

Update [Feb 24th, 2010]

I used this device for almost a year before selling it on the cheap to my friend. His wife quickly laid claim to it however, leaving him sad and bereft. After a year of heavy use my Asus 1000HE held up perfectly. No dead pixels. 200+ recharges later, the battery still held the same charge as the day I laid hands on it. Within my circle of friends and family, two other folks bought the same device and continue to use them as I write this. One friend in particular has dropped hers several times, and while the rattling of small broken pieces emanates from within, the device still continues to function perfectly in spite of its wounds. I've had the opportunity to use and examine other Netbooks and I can say with some confidence, no one has made a better model than this one.

Even the Netbooks Asus put out in the last year have been disappointing in both their manufacturing and composition. The keyboard on this model was unbeatable, as was the power and flexibility it provided, balanced with a lengthy battery life. Had Microsoft not so woefully bungled the transition from XP to Windows 7 (among other things), and Apple's new OS X not been so appealing, I might never have relinquished my Asus Netbook.

Absolutely Perfect.5
I have had the Eee PC 1000HE for about a week now, and it has fulfilled my every expectation. Because I hadn't started up the Eee without installing the 2 GB RAM I'd purchased, this review is relevant to those who plan to upgrade, or have already upgraded the RAM in the unit. For those who don't, I will add that it is extremely easy and inexpensive to double the RAM of this netbook. I had never opened a laptop chassis before, and it took all of 5 minutes.

Pros:
*Up front, the package is inexpensive. You definitely get the bang for your buck
*Bright, brilliant screen with an excellent viewing angle.
*Large, more comfortable keyboard; touch typing is incredibly easy to get used to.
*Long battery life; I've had mine unplugged for over seven hours without a recharge.
*Exactly the amount of power and speed that I need from a computer, I'm able to run some of my favorite games (GTA: San Andreas, UT2004, and Neverwinter Nights) without breaking a sweat, edit photos and stream videos through the wireless card.
*The power-saving hotkeys are really useful. Most of the time I don't notice the difference between 'Power-Saving' mode and 'Super Performace' mode, which means for normal usage I'm saving a lot of battery life.

Cons:

*The volume is a bit too low on the speakers, AND when I'm wearing headphones. I've opened up all of the volume adjusters at one point or another, and I can't increase the volume past a certain point. I could imagine this being very irritating on a long bus ride or a plane ride.
*As really helpful the multi-touch pad is (and it truly is helpful), some of the presets are too closely linked to "scroll up and down". For example, I find myself opening a 'magnifying glass' one moment, and 'zooming out' of a webpage the next. I couldn't figure out why all my webpages were tiny. So disabling most of the multi-touch functions is probably a smart idea when you get started.
*This is just a quibble, but the resolution of 1024 x 600 is so specific to a very small number of machines.

Overall, the Eee PC 1000HE is something I will be using consistently. It is exactly what I need.

Exactly what I needed -- Light, Quick, and Very Cute5
I've had my 1000HE for a week now. I bought it with the 2gb of ram and installed the new ram in under 10 minutes, having never done such a thing in my life before. With the new ram, my 1000HE ran both Windows XP and then the Windows 7 beta with ease. I can run iTunes version 8 and Firefox and Microsoft Word at the same time without any problems.

The blue surface does attract fingerprints, but it's not so noticeable that it bothers me, and I've been consistent (so far) about wiping it clean after every other use.

The webcam works very well, even for a cheap laptop, and I was able to take reasonably defined pics with it.

The battery life with my "normal usage" runs about 8 hours, though I haven't put it on power-saving mode to see if that's much longer.

I use this netbook on the train and haven't had trouble with the volume control in my headphones.

The trackpad buttons are a tad stiff at first, but mine have loosened just in the past week and are now very comfortable to use.

I've found that the 1000HE picks up my home's network very easily and the internet speeds transfer very well.

As for the keyboard, I'm a "proper typist" and was used to the 92 percent size within the first day. The chiclit style is much better, in my opinion, than the old 1000H model or the Acer keyboard.

I transfer all of my programs and games and movies with a usb flash-drive, so I haven't had any need for an external dvd drive

All in all a great investment at under 400 dollars, and I'm a college student who scrimps and saves her every penny.

Versatility Unlimited5

Wow! This is day 4 of using the Asus eePC netbook and it far exceeds my expectations. The Windows 7 starter OS works so well with the computer. Recognized my local network and our local Barnes and Noble wireless network and it was a snap to setup. Vista and XP would have been a nightmare.

I will be using the computer on my travels in the US and Europe. It will function as my telephone via Skype, e-mail writer and reader, listening to books from Audible, reading books downloaded from Barnes and Noble and Amazon. Add to that my mp3 and video player via Windows Media Player. Oh yes, I just typed a letter on word and pulled down a spreadsheet for Windows Live.

Lets start from the top. The LED screen is 10 inches, clear, colorful and seems to be very battery friendly. The keyboard is good except for a very small right shift key. Not as good as my full size keyboard on my desktop but the whole computer weighs less than the keyboard! The speed of the wireless N network on my Asus is similar to my Sony Vaio Duo, fast. Handled my streaming video from Netflick's well. The battery; the 6 cell battery has lasted 10 hours + listening to mp3's while using Microsoft Office, watching video from Netflicks, and reading and listening to books. Didn't turn off the wireless either. Not bad. I haven't done any heavy duty computing like working on video or photo work. I have my quad core desktop for that stuff.

I am wondering how book readers and tablets(Apple?) will be able to compete with a netbook like this? It can do it all and compute as well. If the hardware continues to work as well as it did out of the box, it will will be an ideal road warrior and entertainer.

One of the best decisions I've made.5

I tend to think of myself as very methodical when it comes to electronics purchases, and my netbook purchase was no exception. I wanted great construction, performance, battery life, and value. That's a lot to ask for anything. But here is why I picked the 1005PE-MU17. For reference, here are the other considerations that I had in mind before I settled on the 1005PE-MU17.

1) Asus 1005PE-PU17 ($372)
2) HP 5102 ($400+)
3) Toshiba NB305-410 ($400)

Construction:
I'll admit it, the HP 5102 and Toshiba NB305 are better constructed. The 1005PE-PU17 has the same construction as this one. However, that doesn't mean this netbook's construction is poor in any sense. It feels solid throughout, the screen isn't flimsy, and the keystrokes are crisp. I don't really have a problem typing on the keyboard, but the right shift key will take some time to get used to (not that I use it that often anyway). It is light, and the screen is beautiful for its size. At full power, the graphics on screen are very crisp, I always love gloss screens, because they play videos and so much better. A BIG part of the reason I went with the 1005PE-MU17 over the 1005PE-PU17 is the color choice. The 1005PE-PU17 has only gloss black and gloss blue finishes. I saw these netbooks with dirty fingerprints at the store, and it really takes a lot away from your netbook. By trying to get those fingerprints off, you get more on, and it's really just an endless uphill battle. You can't win. This was enough to warrant me from getting the 1005PE-PU17 series. Luckily, the 1005PE-MU17's 11 hour battery life (as opposed to the 14 hour battery life in the 1005PE-PU17) suits me, and I can live without the bluetooth that the PU17 series adds. The gloss white finish is beautiful, and you can't notice fingerprints on any of the white parts. It's also very attractive, giving off kind of an ipod-esque feel. Get the gloss white, you'll be happy you did.

Performance:
It's great. In all test reviews I read (a lot) the 1005PE series beats out the Toshiba and the HP series netbooks. All were equipped with the new N450 Atoms. While only very marginally, real performance gains are to be had. An attractive feature however, is the Asus ExpressGate. It boots up almost instantly into this mini OS and from there you can chat or surf the web. It's simple and easy. Mouse controls feel slightly different in this Expressgate configuration, but you get used to it. Also, reviews indicated that the HP 5102 tended to get a bit hot and the fan made audible noise in quiet rooms. This is great for libraries, and the fan goes, but you really can't hear it. I've found no hot spots either. So it performs better and runs cool? Yes it does, and extremely well.

Battery Life:
One of the biggest points of owning a netbook is battery life. You want a small computer you can use everywhere, but you shouldn't have to carry a charger everywhere you go. Can you imagine if you needed to carry around your battery charger everywhere you went with your cell phone? No, and it's great that for this netbook, you don't have to. A full charge, under reasonable conditions (not a fully lit screen or super high performance mode) should last you all day. No need to visit an outlet or hunt for one in a crowded coffee shop. Whether it's school or work or simply going to Starbucks for the day to read, you can stay connected without having to lug around the charger. That is one of the biggest benefits of the new N450 Atom processor. You can look forward to nearly 11 hours. I could have gotten the 1005PE-PU17 with the 14 hour battery, which is great in itself, but I knew the fingerprints would have driven me crazy. With the 1005PE-MU17 and its 11 hour battery life, it is nearly as good, but you don't have to be committed into an insane asylum after constantly fighting off the fingerprint smudges. And if anyone wants to know, the charger is tiny anyway, nothing near what my full size notebook needs. So even if you do have to carry it, you can throw it into your purse or backpack and its minimal anyway. Big plus!

Value:
At around $320-$330, this netbook is a steal for this value. While the other netbooks have slightly better construction materials, they don't really beat this one in performance (other than the 1005PE-PU17, but like I said....FINGERPRINTS). This is the core netbook that all netbooks on the market try to beat. And everyone knows it. Asus is still king of the netbook market bar none.

Final Thoughts:
I really wanted the 1005PE-PU17 because it had even better battery life and the extra bluetooth , but I couldn't find anything but that fingerprint attracting gloss black and gloss blue in the US. Those colors are not designed for function, they're designed for PR photos. It looks attractive and all when it's new and untouched, but in actual execution it's not so great. Go check any of the gloss options at retail stores, you'll see what I mean. I don't know who decides on the colors, but there needs to be more options other than that. I wish I wish I wish. But, the 1005PE-MU17 stepped it up with its beautiful gloss white finish, excellent performance, and great battery life. I know there's people out there who are in the same dilemma about the fingerprints, and this netbook is your answer. Get it and be merry.

Does more than I thought it would5

I looked at netbooks and small notebook computers for over a month, and I probably spent more time than is reasonable or sane on the entire project - simply because I wanted to be able to travel lighter than before, and have a computer that could still do most of what I need.

I looked at:

Lenovo U150
Lenovo S10
Acer Aspire One
Toshiba NB205
Dell Mini

I eventually bought the 1005PE because of it's battery life, the processor, and it's keyboard, and overlooked the mouse (which I have come to view as acceptable).

Things I Liked About the 1005PE:
=================================
1. The keyboard. It's much better than I expected. The keys bounce when I type, and I kind of like that. I wouldn't call it flex, and frankly I don't even understand what keyboard "flex" is anyway. I type fast and I write a great deal as part of my job, and if the keyboard were not comfortable, it would be the first reason to not buy the computer. They say the keyboard is 92% of a full size, and it feels that way or just a bit smaller. But it's easy to type on and I love that.

2. The processor. The computer has been able to do everything I wanted. I have watched videos, listened to music, plugged in an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and I've even run several programs at one time. I do a lot of spreadsheet work and I've not used it for any of that, but I am now confident that it could do that reasonably well as long as I didn't go crazy on the rows and columns.

One thing that surprised me is that I was told that I needed to be aware that I could not use the computer for more than one thing at a time, and that it couldn't be my main machine. But the fact is that I've been running two or three programs at once, and it is fine. I know it's not a business-class machine, but for my kind of business, it's doing great. I run trading software (Metatrader 4), gmail, music, and web browsers all at the same time.

I did add 1GB of RAM (for a total of 2GB) and that helps as well, I am sure.

3. The battery life. I love that the battery lasts as long as it does. It seems to be lasting 9+ hours for every charge.

What I didn't like so much
=============================
1. The mouse. The mouse pad has bumps on it and I didn't like that so much. I'd have preferred a little mouse nipple like I have on my Thinkpad X61. I hated that at first and got used to it. Don't get me wrong: the mouse on the 1005PE works fine, and I've gotten used to it. And it was worth getting over for all of the other features.

2. No built in 3G. I'd love to have been able to have a PCI Express card slot or a built in 3G modem. As it stands, I have a USB modem for Verizon's wireless broadband and it works great. It just adds one more piece of equipment that I have to carry around.

I looked at a ton of computers before I bought this one. I'm happy with what I got. I think it's fair to say that for most, they're going to want to have a separate computer if they do major work stuff, but I've found that I am able to do everything I need and I haven't sacrificed any major performance to get it.

Works Awesome!!!5
First day with it but I love it. At first I was going to install my own XP so I didnt have to deal with all the extra's Asus put in XP. But if I did that I would loose the original XP that came with it since they do not give you a full version XP CD but just a recover CD. So I just typed msconfig under START/RUN, went to startup, unchecked all the marks. Then uninstalled all the programs I did not want in the control panel. Wow does it haul now. Zero lag. Feels like I'm using my desktop and I havent even installed the 2GB's of RAM yet. The fit and finish is A+. I LOVE the white as there is NO finger prints. Oh and the recover CD and/or the F9 key does work perfectly as I have tested it. It puts it back as if you just took it out of the box. So you really do not need the external CD drive. Battery life is great. I've been working on the netbook all night with full brightness on and its still at 3 hours left. AMAZING! The keyboard/mouse works great also. I see why this new ASUS model and the one above it is getting high marks. Theres none better.. I've had others.. this is it. I would also like to add and this is a HUGE plus over the glossy screen of the 1005HA-PU1X-BK model, this model has a MATTE screen.. which means no glare!! Others are buying the 1005HA-PU1X-BK but I just cant stand the glossy screen along with the glossy black finger print hungry finish. I will take the lesser option one because just the little things make a huge difference. What good is a laptop if you cant ever go outside in the light because the screen has so much glare. Stick with this one.. its FAST and still does what the other models do.

Incredible !!!5
Wow where do I start. I ordered this net book yesterday after much deliberation from Amazon and paid for the next day shipping as it was only 24.00 dollars. The unit arrived promptly at 2:30 the next day and I live in the boonies so kudos to Amazon. I waited for six months until they worked out the kinks with the net books before I finally pulled the trigger and I'm glad I did.

I narrowed my choices down to This one (the ASUS 1005 HA-V), The Acer Asper, The Sanyo, HP, And several others. I spent two days reading all the reviews on Amazon and I finally landed on this one. The Acer scared me because the screens were breaking and the others just seem a few months behind.

The first thing I did was charge it before turning it on. There were a few scary reviews about the screen of death and not working because of shipping issues so I turned it on with baited breath. It started up and went through the setup process. I had read were XP was over bloated with useless software so I anticipated removing much of which was preloaded. To my surprise I deleted nothing. I added AVAST Anti Virus Software and Firefox. I ran the system scan and did the windows update. After I restarted I expected delays but was shocked at how fast this thing turns on. I surfed the internet (which by the way was picked up in seconds by the unit. If it is encrypted, as mine is you, can do it after your initial setup.)with lightning fast speed. I was contemplating buying the 2GB of RAM but truly there is no need for it as I can see.

This unit is the perfect size and after reading about the Glossy display on other units I am glad I chose this one. There were complaints about the thin pin from the power cord breaking and I can see that happening if you are careless but I plan on charging the unit at night as the battery life will suffice for the entire day the way I use it.

I will be buying another unit for my wife within the next few days so I guess you can say I am extremely pleased.

Ok It is September 09 2009 and I am updating my review. I am typing this on my EEE HA-V so it is still working. After a few months not much has cahnged from my initial review. I am purchasing the 2gb memory as some websites take a little longer than I would like such as Yahoo, Facebook and even Amazon. Other than that it is Awesome. No Problems. I just got back from six flags and I took the laptop with me. It picked the internet up in the Hotel, and I never even need the battery charger.

Still Pleased.

LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT!!!5
A week after my sister-in-law saw my Asus Eee Pc 900, she decided she wanted one. That was about the time I decided I wanted this one. Being a touch typist for umpteen years, I found it very difficult to do anything productive on the other's itty bitty keyboard. I sold her my 900 one day and bought this one the next. NOW this is more like it! The size of the screen is nice. The keyboard is large enough for me to type with ease. It is a sharp looking computer, and I get asked about it everywhere I go. "Is that one of the netbooks? How do you like it?" It is, and I love it!

I think quite honestly if I were recommending a netbook for ease of use, comfort, size and weight, I would without reservations recommend this netbook to anyone, anytime, anywhere. You simply cannot go wrong! Reasonable screen size, comfortable keyboard size, best track pad I've ever used (and you can even turn it off when you use a mouse), LONG battery life, large hard drive, full-size right shift key... What's not to love! You will hardly even notice the half-size up and down keys. These people honestly got the keyboard right, condensed all the right keys, and kept all the needed ones large. The screen is bright, and the computer looks sleek and sharp!

The one and only concern I have is the size of the pin on the power supply. It is tiny, and I could potentially see that would be the one thing I might break. But at a true six-hour battery life, you can surf off and on all day and never need another charge until you plug it in at night.

Don't wait another day to get yourself this notebook, I mean netbook! You'll wish you'd done it sooner! At least, I wished I hadn't waited as long as I did!

Customer Reviews

Arguably the finest 10" netbook with a few caveats5
There are three US versions of the Asus 1005HA:

- Best Buy offers the 1005HA-B for $299 (plus tax). It features the N270 (1.6GHz 533FSB) cpu, glossy display, 3-Cell 23Wh Li-ion Battery (4 hrs), and a 1.3MP webcam. Excluded are the Bluetooth module, 10GB online Eee storage, and netbook sleeve. This is obviously the "Basic" model. I was able to demo this unit at Best Buy on June 27th, and IMO you are giving up quite a bit for the ~$60 savings over the 'P' model. Not to mention that as of now Asus will not sell you a spare 3 or 6-cell Li-Ion battery.

- The 1005HA-V is in the middle of the bunch and the only one with a matte display. Those that frequently work outdoors or despise reflections will appreciate the matted display. It also features a N270 cpu, 6-cell 48Wh Li-ion Battery (8.5 hrs), 0.3MP webcam (according to Amazon specs, but it may in fact be 1.3MP), no Bluetooth, and absent again is the netbook sleeve.

- So in a nutshell (or would that be seashell?) the 1005HA-P offers the faster N280 cpu, glossy display, 1.3MP webcam, 6-Cell 63Wh Li-ion Battery with a whopping 10.5 hrs run time, Bluetooth v2.1, and a black netbook sleeve. Realistic battery numbers are between 8.5-9hrs. of battery life if you're using wifi & doing email/word processing/YouTube/web surfing.

The glossy LED display offers excellent color and contrast when used indoors. I was also pleasantly surprised with the excellent horizontal viewing angles. Keep in mind that once you get in a room full of light or step outdoors screen reflections could become annoying. I've used mine outside on a sunny day, and the screen is still very much legible. In fact it was much more detailed than the matte screen on my Dell D600.

All three units come with the Digital Array Mic which consists of two powerful microphones. Ambient background noises are eliminated, as well as reduced echoes for clearer voice recording. What's more, with only direct sound (within 60°) recorded, you'll obtain better voice capture. I've tested the mic with Skype, and it's loud and clear once you fine tune using the Realtek HD Audio manager. All models also include a WiFi 802.11 b/g/n adapter and 160GB 5400RPM hard drive. My 1005HA-P contains a Hitachi HTS543216L9SA00 hard drive and Atheros AR9285 wifi card. Atheros chipsets are known for excellent range and are typically less prone to connection drops. I'd like to point out that the AR9285 is only capable of 150Mbps.

All three variations of the 1005HA ship with 1GB DDR2 800MHz memory. The good news is that you can remove the memory door on the bottom of the chassis and swap it out for a 2GB DDR2 200-pin SODIMM in under 2 minutes. Anytime you install new memory I'd recommend running a Prime95 "Blend" torture test for 12-24 hrs to make sure your system is stable. The Eee Super Hybrid Engine utility lets users overclock or underclock their Eee PC's to boost performance or provide better battery life depending on their immediate requirements. In Super Performance mode CPU-Z shows the bus speed to increase up to 169.9MHz which translates into roughly 1.7GHz. One way to quickly change modes is to press Fn + spacebar.

One word of advice is to be really careful about which anti-malware software you install since it will degrade performance both on and off the internet on these netbooks. Whatever you elect to install I would highly recommend you benchmark the performance both before and after. In regards to free anti-viruses that run light I would tip my hat to Antivir (nag screen can be disabled by searching Google) and Panda Cloud. For pay versions Norton 2010 & NOD32 should be considered.

One minor annoyance is that the display will not tilt back as far as some people may like. The glossy chassis is also a fingerprint magnet. A few other things I'd like to point out is that you must push the micro-sized right angle end of the ac adapter until it snaps in place or the battery may not charge. In addition the ac adapter does get quite hot while it is actively charging the battery, which Asus clearly mentions in the user manual, so one should not be alarmed over the heat output. The final quirk is that the hard drive is split into two 80GB (before formatting) partitions. Fortunately this can be resolved by using Easeus Partition Master Home which is a free utility.

Overall I am extremely satisfied with the 1005HA-P, and it is arguably the finest 10" netbook on the market. Keep in mind that if you want a White or Pink shell you'll be limited to the 'B' or 'V' models. Asus has already released the two aforementioned colors in Europe & Asia, so hopefully by the end of 2009 we'll get them as an option on the 'P' model. Be sure to check out the Amazon community forum for this product located towards the bottom of this page if you require additional enlightenment. You'll find a lot of tips, tricks, and general FAQ's.

The King of all Netbooks!!!5
Before I get into what I think about this device, here's a quick guide for understanding the different flavors of the 1005HA:

1005HA-P (most expensive)
N280 1.66 GHz Processor, 667MHz Front Side Bus, 1.3MP Web Cam, 10.5 Hour Battery, Glossy Display, Bluetooth, Netbook Sleeve
Available Colors: Black, Blue

1005HA-V (mid range price)
N270 1.6 GHz Processor, 533MHz Front Side Bus, 0.3MP Web Cam, 8.5 Hour Battery, Matted Display
Available Colors: Black, Blue, White, Pink

1005HA-B (cheapest one, sold at best buy)
N270 1.6 GHz Processor, 533MHz Front Side Bus, 0.3MP Web Cam, 4.5 Hour Battery, Matted Display
Available Colors: Black, Blue, White, Pink

Which one to get?
-------------------

It's hard to recommend the B series offered at best buy if you have to pay sales tax. After you add sales tax, you are then approaching the price of the V series which gets twice the battery life. Battery life is one of the biggest features of a netbook so I wouldn't go cheap and get less battery.

Deciding between the V series and the P series really comes done to how much you care about a slight speed different (if any), a small battery life difference, a better web cam, Bluetooth, and/or the netbook sleeve. To me, the extra ~$[...] for the P series is well worth it. A netbook sleeve alone costs $[...] bucks.

Pros:
-------

- The 1005HA-P comes with all the features you want in a netbook. Some ppl may prefer a higher resolution screen but I don't think it's required.
- It's thinner than the 1000HE, although it seems to be as heavy.
- I think the new keyboard rivals the great hp mini keyboards. The full size right shift key was enough for me to drop my 1000HE.
- The best thing about this unit is the battery life. Don't hold your breath for getting 10 whole hours though. Expect 7-8 hours with wifi and Bluetooth on in power save mode. I expect to get 6-7 hours in high performance mode.
- Windows 7 works like a charm.

Cons:
-------

- The long life battery makes this unit heavy. The weight is not a show stopper but it's something to be aware of.
- Some ppl might not like how the touch pad is integrated with the body of the device. The touchpad is bumpy so u can find it in the dark. It took me a day to get use to it.
- The speakers are on the bottom front of the device so when I had it on the bed, the volume was low.
- Upgrading the hard drive requires a lot of work and may void the warranty.
- I don't like the one long rocker button for the touchpad. I prefer 2 separate buttons.

Should you upgrade from the 1000HE to the 1000HA?

Since the battery life difference is minimum, the only reason to upgrade would be to get the better keyboard. To me it's worth it since the right shift key on the 1000HE is annoying. I also prefer the trackpad on the 1005HA but I can understand if it gets mixed reviews.

1005HA vs 1008HA

I like the 1008HA but it's hard for me to recommend it over the 1005HA. For $30-$40 more you get one less usb port, you get covered usb ports which is annoying, and you get less than half the battery life. Yes the 1008HA is slimmer and weighs less. I just can't justify the extra cost of a device that looks good but does less.

Bottom Line:

The 1005HA is really the best netbook currently available. It comes with all the features you need in a netbook. It has the longest battery life of any notebook. The keyboard is now as good as the HP and Samsung netbooks. Unless you are really on a tight budget, or if you need a smaller or less heavy device, there really is no reason to buy another netbook.

Necessary Upgrades:

Make sure you get the correct memory for this device. Don't think about running Windows 7 without 2GB of Ram

Netbooks do not come with DVD drives so consider get a cheap external one.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001MLZKAQ?ie=UTF8&tag=pc-accessories-10-20&creativeASIN=B001MLZKAQ

UPDATE:

There seems to be a debate over using the 667MHz memory Amazon recommends versus 800MHz memory the 1005HA ships with. I've read that the 800MHz is beneficial but I also read that the 800MHz runs at 667MHz even if u overclock. There's a heated discussion on the eeeuser form about this. Check it out for yoursef.

UPDATE 2:

While my 1005HA works like a charm, I personally know several folks that have experienced issues with the battery and/or power supply. I see the same reports on the web. I don't know if these issues have been resolved in currently shipping units. If you plan to buy one, test the heck out of it before your 30 day return windows is up!

Scared to Death5
I honestly don't know where to start with this review of the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BU netbook that I bought. I have read all 152 previous reviews on Amazon.com and a whole bunch of others that I found on computer oriented Internet sites. The four and five star ratings far outnumbered the negative ones, but it was the couple of dozen unenthusiastic reviews that scared the heck out of me. I delayed ordering the computer because of the horror stories of bad batteries, faulty chargers and blue screen crashes.

Eventually, I noticed that most of these critical reviews referred to the battery or to the charging brick and most of those were describing what could have easily been mistakes made by the owners of the machine. They didn't attach the power cord properly or the charging time was too short and some didn't seem to understand how to determine when the battery was fully charged. Some complainers faulted the battery life, but didn't take into account what was running or turned on when using the computer. The battery is drained more quickly when the computer is operating with all rockets running. In other words, when I subtracted the operator associated problems or misconceptions from the difficulty with the Asus hardware there were only a few legitimate complaints about the machine. In reading reviews of other machines it was obvious that they had their share of detractors too. One gripe I can verify is how the Asus Eee PC lid is a fingerprint magnet. It really is.

I researched about all of the netbooks on the market today (Acer, HP, Toshiba, Dell, Samsung and of course the Asus Eee PC line. Having purchased one of the first Eee mini-laptops (the 7 inch 701 with a Linux operating system) when they first came out I have been impressed with the quality and dependability of the Asus product. I suppose that is one reason why I kept gravitating to the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BU as I explored the reviews for other brands--in spite of the warnings about unworkable battery chargers and inoperative batteries I bought the Asus Eee PC.

Frankly after exploring the field, I concluded that most of the netbooks for sale today are not all that much different in features, price or even quality. They all have built-in cameras, 10.1 inch screens, Windows XP operating systems, a plethora of USB ports, a card reader, WiFi and most have a few color choices. The main difference is probably the ten hour battery that is unique and ships with the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BU. All of the other netbooks had three or six hour batteries on board. I wanted the netbook to use on long airplane flights so the long life battery was a real plus for me. I also liked the idea of being able to restore the computer with an fn-key instead of relying on a CD to come out of hiding in case of big trouble. The Asus Eee PC is sleek and that big battery doesn't stick out on the back edge like the other netbook high capacity batteries do. The `P' model of the Asus Eee PC has Bluetooth built in and a nice cushy zippered sleeve to protect it while traveling.

I have been using my Asus Eee PC 1005HA just as it came out of the box--no memory upgrade, no Windows 7 and no additional software. I find it just about perfect the way it is. You should understand that this is not a full featured laptop squeezed into a smaller and manageable size. The keyboards are 92% the size of those found on a standard computer and the machines run a little hot. Those 10.1 inch screens are a bit cramped if several toolbars have been turned on. The main thing you might miss on the netbooks is a CD/DVD drive. There ain't one. However, an external CD/DVD drive can be purchased for about $65. Anyhow, a netbook is meant to be a small back to basics mini-computer for word processing, e-mail, Web surfing and other fundamental computing, but don't expect to play a lot of high end games or edit photographs on it. Once you see a netbook in your future, the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BU is worth a look.

OK, here is my feeling about the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BU after two weeks of use: I like it a lot; the battery and charger problems I feared so much have not materialized. I am satisfied with my choice and recommend the machine over all of the others I researched. If something really bad happens to my new Asus Eee PC as I use it longer, I will edit this review and let you know about it. I am still a little worried about that battery thing.

P.S. I used a thin coating of guitar polish/wax buffed onto the lid and the finger print problem was diminished considerably.

FOLLOW-UP:

I thought it is about time to update my earlier review of the Asus Eee PC 1005HA netbook. I may have left you with some question about the battery and charging system--I am sorry about that. I no longer have any qualms about batteries or chargers. After almost two months of using my new Eee PC 1005HA I can report no problem with the battery, bringing the battery to a full charge (realistically about 9 ½ hours) or the charging brick itself. Flawless is a word that comes to mind.

While I am at it, I might as well report complete satisfaction with the Eee PC 1005HA build. It is a well made netbook and everything fits and works. It is sleek and solid. It is a little bit on the heavy side, but I don't have a problem with that. The keyboard is large enough to accommodate touch typing with ease. The machine boots up quickly. It has plenty of memory (1 GB) on board for how I use it--e-mail, web surfing and word processing with the Microsoft WORKS program which is included.

The Windows XP operating system has functioned perfectly. I set up my home network WiFi connection with the netbook easily, quickly and effectively. The Bluetooth feature worked very well too. Some of the Asus special on screen controls, update and expand features built into the machine have not been all that useful and some border on being advertisements for buying Asus stuff. Those things are not obtrusive and can be easily ignored.

I have added the ASUS USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive to my little machine, but have not really used it very much. I got it just in case I wanted to add some software to my netbook or perhaps store some data on disks. Frankly, making that rather spendy purchase for "just in case" reasons is probably rather silly, but I did it anyhow.

The Asus Eee PC 1005HA remains a fingerprint magnet in spite of my occasional clean up with guitar polish. I guess having to live with some smudges on the shiny lid is not a big deal.

I still recommend the Asus Eee PC 1005HA after using it for awhile. I am convinced that this netbook is the best one on the market today.

Update some more:

I just solved the fingerprint problem that exists with the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA shiny surface lid. And at the same time, added a layer of protection for the machine.

I bought and installed an mCover® CLEAR Hard Shell Sleeve Carrying Case for the Asus Eee PC 1005 Series Netbook. I acquired the mCover hard shell from Amazon.com for about $15 as protection for my netbook while traveling. When I got the shell attached (a simple process) I immediately noticed the lid no longer picked up fingerprints. The plastic shell simply does not show prints and the appearance of the netbook is not changed very much. It is just like adding a second skin.

Update even more:

My face is really red today. The mCover shell I bragged about turned out to be a loser--not a winner. The bottom half of the shell became impossible to install and usless when one of the attachment tabs broke off. I am very sorry about recommending that plastic sleeve. I still have the top part of the mCover on my Eee PC, but the bottom section went in the trash. By the way, my ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU1X-BU Netbook is still the best there is. I continue to like it a lot.
